An exclusion zone will be in place at Moore Park Beach from Tuesday, February 18.

Bundaberg Regional Council is preparing to demolish the old surf club which includes building materials containing asbestos.

Heavy vehicles will be required along the foreshore and the beach so locals and visitors are urged to steer clear of the area.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said Council was taking the lead on the demolition ahead of a king tide on 28 February.

“Council’s emergency response has already seen the bank reinforced through sand bagging and concreting which has limited further damage to the surf club’s foundations,” Cr Bartels said.

“This king tide poses a new threat to the building and we must prioritise public safety by safely removing the structure before any more uncontrolled damage can occur.

“Council remains committed to doing all necessary works to ensure community safety.”

There have been plans to demolish the building for years due to constant erosion issues and redevelopment in the area. Works have been brought forward due to significant erosion in late January which exposed the foundations of the surf club.

Cr Bartels said the emergency works would protect the foreshore and recent investments made in the Moore Park Beach area by Council.

“Our Moore Park Beach Masterplan is already underway with the delivery of a new community hub.

“Through the masterplan works we’ve also worked alongside Surf Lifesaving Queensland to provide significant support to the development of the new Moore Park Beach Surf Lifesaving clubhouse and facilities.”
