Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn, the vibrant and (slightly) divisive Olympian, is hanging up her competitive sneakers! On Thursday, she made waves on 2DayFM by announcing her retirement from the world of competitive breaking.
After bombing at Paris 2024, Raygun decided it was time to shift gears. “I still break, but I don’t compete. I’m not going to compete anymore. No. No,” she chuckled.
“I was planning to continue competing, definitely, but now it seems really difficult for me to face a battle.”
Despite her extraordinary career, the backlash left her reeling. “It’s been really upsetting. I just didn’t have any control over how people saw me or who I was,” Gunn confessed.
The performance, which some critics harshly labelled as a mockery, sparked outlandish conspiracy theories about her selection with the help of her husband-coach, Samuel Free.
Though baseless, these claims drew a firm rebuttal from the Australian Olympic Committee. Unfazed, Gunn focuses on the positives. “You’ve brought joy, you’ve brought laughter,” Gunn reflects, appreciating the support while continuing to inspire dancers everywhere to embrace their uniqueness.
